Forest Ecology Field Studies

Description:   The course will be a study of the forest ecosystems concentrating on plant communities, soils, and site conditions in one of the following regions: Boreal (FOR 454A), Lake States (FOR 454B), Appalachians (FOR 454C) Southern Pine (FOR 454D) depending on year and interests.  Each course requires a field trip of approximately 10 days.  Each trip is two semester credits; a maximum of 6 credits may be applied toward graduate credit.  These courses have traditionally been offered during the summer session.  Estimated costs will vary for each trip depending on the distance traveled and lodging and meal accommodations. Students should have a background in forestry, natural resources, botany, zoology, biology, geology, geography, environmental science or related science.  Prerequisites: senior standing in natural or biological sciences, courses in tree identification, forest ecology, soils, and consent of instructor.

Grading:    Grading will be based on course participation, field tests, and a field journal.
       
Materials:   Assigned readings will be given prior to the trips.  Proper woods or field clothing such as long pants, long-sleeved shirts, sturdy boots, raincoat and warm clothing is suggested.   Insect repellent may be necessary.  Bring a field notebook, pens, pencils, paper, and perhaps a camera to help document the trip.

Other:   All students must submit a completed health form at the time of and paying course fees.
