COURSE TITLE: Forest Industries

INSTRUCTOR: John E. Phelps

A. Catalog Description:

Analysis of raw material requirements, the processes and the products of
            forest industries.  The environmental impact of each forest industry will also
            be discussed.

B. Prerequisite: None

C. Objectives:

To acquaint the student with products and processing methods of the solid
            wood and the pulp and paper industrial sectors.  To provide an
            understanding of the hardwood and softwood products industries.

D. Topic Outline:

Introduction - Historical aspects of wood using industries
Primary industries - sawmills, veneer mills, lumber grading
Secondary solid wood industries - pallets, furniture, flooring, plywood
Reconstituted wood products industries - particleboard, pulp and paper,
            fiber
Energy, fuels and chemicals from wood
